5 Tips to Spring Clean Your Office

Everyone knows a Clutter Carl… you may respect him as a colleague, but the moment you step foot into their office space it all goes out the window.

“According to a new survey, a majority of workers (57%) admit to judging a coworker based on the cleanliness of their workspace and nearly half say they have been "appalled" by a dirty office.” Reports Forbes

Don’t be a Clutter Carl, get your office in ship shape with this quick check list!

  1. Take an assessment of your space and assign a section of your desk for each of your daily functions – chances are you’ll already have a vague idea of what works for you already, you might just not be using it properly - knowing your notes are always kept to your left, your to-do pile to your right, and your manual in the corner will keep things clear and at your fingertips

  2. Figure out your nearby nessesities and shift everything else to a filing system or other storage away from your immediate perimeter

  3. Go as paperless as possible – the truth is, you will likely never be able to eliminate paper from your life, but try and figure out non-essential paper you use: that might be post-its, emails, or staff announcements, and find a way to do the same task digitally. With the paper you must use, make sure you recycle it as soon as it is no longer relevant to your work, at the very least file it away. Do regular assessments (every month or every quarter) of your paper to eliminate it as much as possible.

  4. Organize the places your coworkers won’t see – like your desktop icons, and “everything drawer

  5. Once your space looks nice and tidy, it’s time to CLEAN! Get a good ecofriendly disinfectant (Shoppers Drug Mart has a reasonable one under their BioLife brand, Method, and Seventh Generation are also good options) and wipe down these key areas regularly:

- Phone receiver, mouthpiece, and keypad

- Computer keyboard and mouse

- Table surfaces

- Door handles
